Some Dos And Don'ts For Choosing Moving Boxes

Posted on

When preparing for your big move, the boxes you choose will be an integral part of a successful and stress-free experience. But with all the choices you have available, which boxes should you get? And what should you avoid when working with each? Here are a few key dos and don'ts.

Do Get Plenty of Medium Boxes

Many people find the most useful box size is a medium-sized one. This box, usually somewhere around three cubic feet, is large enough to be worth the effort of packing but small enough to be manageable. While you will need smaller and larger ones, get extra medium boxes.

Don't Fill Large Boxes Completely

When you do use larger boxes, plan for weight more than efficiency. Because larger boxes invite people to fill them with more stuff, they can easily become too heavy for safe lifting. Keep light items, such as linens and bedding, to fill up gaps in large boxes without adding too much weight.

Do Think Creatively

Some moving boxes come with labels that identify their primary purpose. Wardrobe boxes, for example, are designed to carry the contents of your closet and dish packing boxes are for dishware. However, this doesn't mean you can't use them for other things. Learn about box sizes and shapes, keeping this in mind when you think about some of your more challenging items. Wardrobe boxes could be a great place for last-minute bedding packed up on the day of the move.

Don't Use Too Many Sizes

Many people who plan to move collect used boxes from stores, friends, or their workplace. These will be a variety of shapes and sizes, which can come in handy when you face something with a unique need. However, if you do use random boxes, try to collect ones with roughly the same shape and size. Doing so makes packing, stacking, loading, and unloading easier and more efficient.

Do Get Help From Movers

Assess which items you have that will be particularly challenging to pack up. This may be due to their fragility, weight, bulk, or odd shape. Rather than spend too much time trying to find a way to box up such items, work with your movers to handle them instead. You save time and the movers will be more prepared to pack and move these safely and quickly.
