3 Home Improvement Ideas For New Lottery Winners

Posted on

If you're lucky enough to have recently won the lottery, you might be thinking of what to do with the winnings. You might have had dreams of buying a private island, a gigantic yacht, or a penthouse on Central Park West, but unless you won a multi-state jackpot, you've come to the realization that even winning a state lottery won't net you the hundreds of millions to play with. And when you take your lump sum, and account for taxes, you might even find that you've gotten a lot less than you imagined. Of course, you've still won the lottery, and so you do have a ton of free cash all of a sudden. So, while buying a mega-mansion in Beverly Hills might be out of your price range, you can completely transform your current home, especially if you really like your house and your neighborhood but would just like to make it a bit bigger or more spectacular. Here are some cool home renovation ideas to consider.

Expand The Master Bathroom

One of the big selling points of huge mansions is that they tend to have really large and lavish bathrooms. In regular homes, you don't often find this. And there is only so much you can do by swapping out an old bathtub or repainting the walls. So now that you have the money, you should bring in an architect and decide how to expand the room. Once the plans are drawn up, the contractors can come in and gut the old bathroom, tear down the walls and cut the studs, and then re-frame the room. This larger space will allow you to have luxury styling like you see in designer magazines and in 5 star hotels. You can have huge walk-in showers with waterfall heads, a soaking tub, and beautiful marble tiling.

Go Green: Solar Power Your Home

If you've always been interested in solar power, but have found the process a bit intimidating because of the big upfront expense, then now is your chance to go green. You can have a new roof installed using solar shingles. You might also want to have a solar array setup in your side yard (if you have the property) to really maximize the sun's energy. There are contractors that will hook up every electrical item in your home, including your hot water tank, so that you can get all of your energy from the sun.

Build An Addition

If you find that your home is too small, but you otherwise love the design and the location, then you should have an addition built. You might want an extension into the backyard from your kitchen. You could have it walled in glass so that you have a large dining area that allows you to sit with a wonderful view but protected from the elements. It's also possible to have the addition compensate for a lack of space in other areas. If you are interested in a bathroom expansion, but would need to take over the spare bedroom in order to expand the bathroom, then the addition can be used to compensate for the loss of the guest bedroom. This way you can still have your master bath, but not loose the ability to have guests stay over.
